A Strong Immune System

A Strong Immune System

We’ve been told time and again a strong immune system is vital for a healthy body. We hear lots of advice: “Do this, eat that, to boost your immune system.”

But let’s stop for a moment and consider. What does boosting your immune system really mean? Well, first we must understand how important the immune system really is!

Your immune system is your body’s natural defence against illness and injury. The system has its own defence mechanisms that are used to protect us by limiting or prevent infection. The body truly is amazing!

Your only job is to make sure that your immune system is functional and up to the job! And you know, that’s not so hard at all. There is so much you can do to keep your immune system in check!

A healthy diet is at the top of the list! Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes. They contain antioxidants and vitamins that may lower your likelihood of getting sick. An antioxidant-rich crowd favourite is garlic! Not only does it add great taste to food, but you can make it into a tea as well! Some of us opt for nutritional supplements to get the right amounts of daily antioxidants and vitamins, but it’s always good to check in with your doctor before taking them.

There are some foods you should stay away from because they can suppress your immune system. Be careful with foods high in sugar! Instead, eat more foods with lean protein, healthy fats and those that are rich in probiotics, (beneficial bacteria), like yogurt.

A good diet on its own isn’t enough; you need to make other good lifestyle choices. High levels of stress affect your immune system, so look for healthy coping mechanisms. Regular exercise is great, and it doesn’t have to be boring. Try fun activities like paint ball or hiking! Avoid those unhealthy coping mechanisms like excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

I really want to emphasise how important it is to get adequate sleep. Our bodies regenerate while we sleep. Have you ever gone to bed not feeling very well and then woken up feeling better? That’s not by chance! Sleep needs differ for each person. They key is to get quality sleep especially between the hours of 10p.m. and 2a.m.

Don’t take your immune system for granted, give it some help by taking all the necessary precautions! You can actively avoid infection by washing your hands frequently and wearing a face covering where necessary. Stay up to date with all recommended vaccines as they play a vital role in helping your immune system fight off infection.
