Easy Steps to Heart Health!

Easy Steps to Heart Health!

Did you know that February is Heart Health Awareness Month? That’s important because heart disease is becoming even more prevalent across the region. It is one of the leading causes of death in the Caribbean!

So, what exactly do we mean by heart health? And how can you take care of your heart? We’re here to help!

Heart health is all about making good choices, and there are many easy steps you can take right now.

Every little bit of Movement helps! Every bit of activity contributes to your heart health. You can plant in the garden or walk the dog; exercise can be fun! And it’s easy to make movement part of your everyday life; sweeping and cleaning are great for your heart health! Try dancing to your favourite song—that’s cardio! Try Yoga or Pilates, both build strength! Movement helps improve your heart's ability to pump blood to your lungs and throughout your body.

Make Relaxation a Priority! Start with the basics, get a good night's sleep. Now add some self-care. Try healthy coping mechanisms to reduce stress like journaling, colouring, or a new hobby or craft like crochet. Maybe even learn a new musical instrument. Stress undermines your heart health, so let’s tackle it head on!

Eat with your Heart in Mind! The power is in your kitchen. Make sure you stock it with good, heart-healthy foods, and get rid of all those unhealthy foods.

Great choices: Leafy green veggies, whole grains, avocados, walnuts, oats, beans, berries (fresh may be expensive, but frozen are a good choice), salmon fish and flax seed.

Foods to avoid: Anything high in salt, saturated fat or refined carbohydrates. And one extra tip, if you want a healthy heart quit smoking and cut down on alcohol!

Getting to heart health may seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Just get started and it will get easier and easier. Here’s to a happy Heart!
