Challenging Perceptions

Women in non-traditional roles
Challenging Perceptions
Diversity and inclusion are values we hold dear. It is critical for us as an organization that women, and their views, be properly represented. Embracing women’s talents leads to greater innovation and agility, and this includes unlocking potential in roles not traditionally held by females to position our company for even greater success. We’re highlighting the contribution of our females in non-traditional roles as they share their thoughts on their experiences and inspirations.

Kristie Lalla, Market SHE Specialist

"Being physically small, I was initially perceived to be ‘a little girl’, but I am thankful that my manager gave me equal opportunities to tackle challenging situations head-on. The guys see me on the floor getting it done and they respect that.

In Safety, it is all about culture change, but when it actually happens it is an amazing thing!  It is about people understanding why they need to adopt safe practices, not just because it is an organisational rule.

I draw inspiration from my mom who taught me to never give up, and my uncle who spent a lot of quality time with us growing up.”

Camille Gouldbourne, Transport Specialist
“I enjoy the planning process and the daily sense of accomplishment that comes with knowing that the load that I planned and dispatched, was delivered to all customers without any returns.

As a woman in my role, I am confident that I have the trust and respect of my male peers. There is never a major decision where they do not seek my input. It is not something you tend to see in a role that is considered to be typically male, and I feel valued because they value me.

I am inspired by the determination and resilience of the many people in my life that failed and continued to fail until they got it right.”

Fidelis Boland, Weighting Room Attendant

"I like working by myself in the Weighing Room. In particular, I enjoy the precision of measuring out the tiny amounts of ingredients needed to make our products, especially for our  Orange and Apple Drinks.

When I had my boys, I worked shift; all the way up to the year 2000. We made it work with the help of my husband and my mum, who would take care of them while I was working. Back then, there were only two shifts and we had a pay-phone booth on the compound. I remember always saving coins so that I could call to check up on them. I am most inspired by my family.

I just want to see my sons and grandchildren happy and safe.”

Chardae Hanson, SHE and General Services Coordinator

“Men look at you differently when they realise that you are not afraid to get your hands dirty and mess up your hair. I feel proud that I am smart and capable enough to implement safe strategies and get the job done, regardless of my gender.

Here at Nestlé, I mostly enjoy the interaction with people on a daily basis, while ensuring that the building is properly maintained – from infrastructure, to plumbing, electrical etc. I feel good knowing that everything is working properly and all employees are safe.

My mom inspires me because we are similar in terms of always being on the go. She pushes me and encourages me to take on challenges, and to never say that I can’t.”

Sarada Maharaj, Industrial Services Technician

"I am very pleased to be the first woman to work in the Engineering Department, and it makes me proud to know that the factory runs steadily as a result of what we contribute.

The values by which I live my life are to be honest about everything, give more than is received and to be content with what you have as much as possible.

I am inspired by my older sister who is a brilliant attorney, as well as my husband and 1 ½ year old daughter."
